Here at CLASH, we know a thing or two abut winning. We participated in a Charlie Sheen bootcamp about a year back, and learned everything we needed to know about winning. We’ve got a pretty good handle on things, unlike our friend Charlie, and have put together 4 tips for you to WIN at Bay to Breakers 2013. You may not actually place first in the race (or even at all), but you’ll have a victorious feeling in your heart, and will end the day as a winner.

1. Win at Drinking

You’re going to have an amazing time at Bay to Breakers 2013. But the only way you’ll be able to enjoy it from start to finish is if you pace yourself. And no, I’m not referring to running strategy. In order to maintain that perfect buzz, you’re going to have to show a little restraint. When you crack that first beer at 6am, remember that you have the opportunity to enjoy many many more of those throughout the day. Heck, get a little crazy with it, and bring along some water.

2. Win at Costumes

THIS IS YOUR MOMENT! This is better than Halloween, or every weekend in San Francisco for that matter. It’s daylight, which means people can actually see your costume. And you get to dress as a group! Oh lord, the possibilities. Whether your approach is to raid the thrift store the night before or to hand-sew your costume every night after work for the next week, remember that people love originality, outragouesness (let’s get that one submitted to Merriam-Webster), and neon. Our resident Captain Joe is the king of neon, and will be accepting questions via the comments should you need some advice.

3. Win at Racing

There are going to be so many GD people at this event, all you have to do is follow the crowd. Don’t bother using precious mental energy figuring out where to go. Save those brain cells for killing later. Just try to stick together, especially if your costumes are coordinated. The photo opportunities will be lost if you’re missing Scooby Doo, but the rest of the gang is there.  The only other thing you need to keep in mind is to actually finish the race. Major party foul if you don’t.

4. Win at After-Partying

After drinking more than you should, romping around this great city of ours, and generally not caring about anything all day, you are bound to love what you do after Bay to Breakers. It just comes with the territory. Endorphins will be flying so get out there, mingle with scantily clad members of the opposite sex, and share your beer! Sharing is caring. Heck, I’ve even seen a few body paint fights break out and everyone still ended with a smile on their faces.

True wins come from drinking hard but not passing out, looking fly and unique in your costume, snapping a few commemorative pics, and finishing the race in all your glory. Bonus points for rallying strong for the after party. (Disco naps are permissible, but frowned upon).

Now get out there, and make CLASH proud.

Two time thumb-wrestling champion, Lexus Cruz, dropped by our offices today to give us her secrets to ultimate victory, so you can impress your friends, teams, dates, boss, and more.

Read on and never feel the shame of losing a thumb-wrestling match again. 

Thumb-Wrestling Techniques

#1 The Cobra

Psych out your opponents by beginning with a strong thumb—flexed towards the air (aka victory). Your opponent will tire their thumbs out trying to break you. Do not give in. Let them jab away while you smirk, knowing that your opponents’ feeble attempts will only bring their defeat faster.

#2 The Mark Zuckerberg

Once your opponent has tired out, poke his or her thumb repeatedly. This poke acts as a tease to bring down your opponent’s morale. Weaken his or her spirit before moving on.

#3 Possum

Pull a possum by limp-thumbing it. Your opponent will see your resting thumb as a chance to attack, but you’re one step ahead! Playing dead gives you an opportunity to have your opponent’s thumb close to the base of your hand so you can do the next move:

#4 The Round House

Lexus Cruz watched Chuck Norris films on repeat for the first 15 years of her life. She then adapted Chuck Norris’ famous martial arts techniques such as his round-house kick for thumb-wrestling. After you’ve hit the possum pose, spin your thumb around and go for your opponent’s knuckle (not the nail).

Now you’ve gained ultimate domination of your thumb-wrestling match!

For those of you who don’t know what coworking is, it’s a kind of cooperative workspace environment where individuals or folks from separate companies can work together! It’s perfect for entrepreneurs and small companies. 

Because NextSpace has so many different individuals coming together to work, they’ve done some fun team-building activities with us. I just wanted to feature some of the awesome team-members of NextSpace.

Meet the NextSpace Crew

This is Kyle. He’s the community builder at NextSpace. His bright and shining face is the first thing you see when you walk into the office space.

Fun fact: Kyle wanted to be a lego architect when he was a kid. 

Shim & Matan showed their martial arts skills (they’re from Israel, the birthplace of Krav Maga!).They work with Drippler, an app that keeps you up to date on your mobile devices. Matan is the CEO! Their usual office is in Tel Aviv.

Fun Fact: Shim’s spirit animal is a dolphin. Matan loves the NextSpace chairs. 

Joe and Adam from Giant Staffing sneak attacked their fellow coworker during her office call. Giant Staffing works out of NextSpace and recruits folks for interactive and creative positions in all sorts of companies.

Anubhav showed us a perfect power lunge—he is SO prepped for a scavenger hunt. Anubhav does UX design and development. He’s new to NextSpace, loves the team, and can’t wait for the next team-building adventure.

Dusty showed off his ab strength in a perfect plank. Dusty is a developer and is currently working on a cool golf GPS app. 

Lindsay’s enthusiasm and energy make her the perfect community curator at NextSpace. She helps bring all of these developers, consultants, freelancers, entrepreneurs, small tech startups and even a sex coach and helps them become the family-like team that they are!

Did I mention that we are hosting a FREE All Ages scavenger hunt within the De Young Museum’s Sculpture Garden tomorrow night (Friday March 29th) at 6 PM? The event will be about 45 minutes, complete with a drool-worthy grand prize, and lots of culture! How frisky have you gotten with works of art?

This is the perfect free Friday night event to bring your kids! Your date! Your boss! That neighbor whose car you ran into! Oh my goodness, there will be free Ghiradelli chocolate. 

Really. If you’re looking for a unique adventure in an Francisco, the De Young Museum tomorrow night is the place to be. How often do you get to see penguins, adventure guides in spandex, and classic art all in the same place? Never. Never. Just tomorrow. 

Afterwards, say hi to Johannes Vermeer’s lady, the Girl with a Pearl Earring. If you squint hard enough, she kind of looks like Scarlett Johansson. There’s also a gorgeous observatory that allows you a most romantic view of the entire city. Don’t miss this!

The De Young Museum contacted us last week. Apparently there’s a penguin on the run from California Academy of Sciences and they’ve called in CLASH because they heard we do the best scavenger-hunts. They asked if our scavenger-hunt skills translate to penguin hunting skills. We said YES!

CLASH and the De Young invite everyone in the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond to join us on Friday evening at the De Young to help us catch this penguin! A prize will be given to the one who can trap this beast! We need to make sure this penguin is caught before there is an untamable flock of penguins in Golden Gate Park, spreading avian flu!

Hunt stars at 6 PM. Join us for some free delicious classiness in San Francisco.
